Amigoland by Oscar Casares

amigolandReviewed by Nancy Eaton

Don Fidencio and Don Celestino are brothers who have not talked to each other in sometime due to an incident that happened many years ago. They are both getting up in age and Don Fidencio is in a nursing home. The brothers are both very similar in a way especially when it comes to being stubborn.

Socorro, who is Celestino’s housekeeper and girlfriend, makes an attempt to get the two brothers back together. One morning the two of them go to the nursing home and take Fidencio with them as they begin a journey to their grandfather’s childhood home. You just know this is not going to be a smooth trip! Socorro works in the middle to help the two brothers sort out everything.

Oscar Casares is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. Amigoland will bring out many emotions in the reader – everything from many laughs to some tears. There is no sad ending – it is one that you will not anticipate but will appreciate. The three main characters are very compelling and you have to appreciate Socorro for everything she tries to do to get the brothers back together. Oscar Casares does an excellent job with the characters. They captured the true meaning of the story and they show us that no matter how old one might be or how long you did not talk to each other it is never too late to make amends.
