Liesel Meninger is a young foster girl living outside Munich in Natzi Germany. Liesel has a problem. She steals books and will take them from almost any place she can find them. Even though stealing books is wrong, it did turn into something good.

Leisel's foster father plays an accordion. What does Leisel do with all the books she steals? With the help of her foster father, she learns to read and reads the books to her neighbors during bombing raids as well as to a Jewish man in her basement.

The interesting thing about this book is that it is narrated by "Death".

It's hard to believe that this book is written for young adults because it would appeal to an older adult also. The author has a writing style that is very elegant and the memory of this book will stay with the reader for a long time. This is one of the most well written books I have read in some time. It is recommended that you add this book to your reading list. It is one that you will thoroughly enjoy reading!
