BOOK REVIEW: A DANGEROUS CLIMATE
BY CHELSEA QUINN YARBRO

We hope you enjoy this book review by Teri Davis.

Most readers of historical fiction would not be interested in a historical novel with the main character being a vampire. Shockingly, they are missing an outstanding historical fiction account if they choose to pass up A DANGEROUS CLIMATE because of the vampire involvement. The historical perspective is truly enriching and unique in this unusual novel.

The importance of this novel is its setting and motivation which is the development of St. Petersburg in Russia. Apparently the land where St. Petersburg is today was owned by Sweden and Czar Peter the Great was responsible for winning it for his people. The war seemed simplistic to developing this marsh-land into the dream of a true European city inside Russia. The daily challenges of a foreign community and influence upon the Russian culture and religion, not to mention the attractions of many who saw this as an opportunity for themselves, makes this a delightful and believable novel. (Yes, even with vampires.)

The vampire, Count Saint-Germain, is disguised as a Hungarian nobleman assisting his pretend wife, who is Polish to spy on the Czar. Life becomes more complicated when Saint-Germain is attacked twice and his pretend wife’s brother also sets up his residence in the city. Just to make it more confusing, a fake Count Saint-Germain also has taken up residence in the city.

Much of the story revolves around the medical challenges at the time, as well as the construction. Count Saint-Germain, the real one, chooses to live with the medical community assisting them and befriending the doctor and nurse who diligently nurture and treat their patients. There are obvious uses of herbal medicines as well as the hint of using penicillin.

The life of a vampire is challenged in one instance by Czar Peter who insists that Count Saint-Germain drink with him. Alcohol, unfortunately, is not easily digested by those who prefer blood.

A DANGEROUS CLIMATE is a continuation of the longest-running series of vampire novels in the English language by Chelsea Quinn Yarbro. For a continuation, Ms. Yarbro has written superbly as this is easily read without needing the background of reading the previous novels.

Chelsea Quinn Yarbro has written numerous Saint-Germain novels such as HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA, DARK OF THE SUN, A FEAST IN EXILE, and MIDNIGHT HARVEST. She lives in Berkeley, California.
