BOOK REVIEW: |
Jack Wade was one of the best arson investigators in the Orange County Sheriff Department’s arson unit. Jack lost his job after he became involved in a scandal involving a witness.
Jack is now working as a claims adjuster for the California Fire and Life Mutual Insurance Company. He is very knowledgeable and knows how to find the truth.
Jack is called in to investigate what appears to be a suspicious claim. Real estate millionaire Nicky Vale’s house is burned with his young wife in it. The house is one of the most valuable in the area. The county sheriff’s investigator has declared the fire accidental because beside Mrs. Vale was a bottle of vodka. It was assumed she had too much to drink and then lit a cigarette.
Soon after Jack got involved in this investigation, he was not so sure this fire was accidental. Several things just didn’t add up. There was no smoke in Mrs. Vale’s lungs, the smoke from the fire should have been a different color and the family dog was outside.
Jack must now use all of his knowledge and skills to prove this was arson and not an accident. He gets more than he bargained for as he starts to wonder if he will make it out of this investigation alive.
Is Jack successful?
Don Winslow has written a thriller that will keep the reader turning the pages. This book totally absorbed my interest from the very first page and I just could not let go of this novel. The short opening chapters will grab the reader’s attention and keep them there. What really made this book so interesting are the many facts that you will learn about arson investigation as you read through the pages. If you are looking for a good read, be sure to add California Fire and Life to your list. It is a book with an exciting plot, intriguing characters and writing that will not disappoint you.
