This is a wonderful story about four women, Vaughn, Reenie, Susan and Audrey that follows them from their friendship in the fifth grade up to their 30th class reunion.
Vaughn is the one who has a specialty for writing. She is also the one who holds the group together.
Reenie is pretty and popular but she made a tragic mistake. What happened?
Susan is a successful anchorwoman but there is something in her past that is troublesome. What is it?
Audrey strives for perfection but she soon finds out that this can take a toll on everyone involved in her life.
The best part about this novel is that even though many things happened in the lives of the four women, they managed to keep their friendship with each other. The one sentence that really sums up this book is "When I look back on those days, I wish I had the eyeglasses that I wore when I was ten. The lenses were as thick as Coke bottles, they weren't as clean as they weren't adjusted for bifocals, but they saw the world more plainly, if that's possible." This book will bring back many memories to the reader such as double-dutch jump rope, Barbie dolls, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on Wonder Bread, oreo cookies, round steak and mashed potatoes with gravy and of course, Diana Ross and the Supremes.
This is a heartwarming novel that has a touch of humor to it and it is one that is sure to make you glad you decided to read it. Sheila Williams has done an excellent job of showing the reader that true friendships can survive no matter what stands in the way. This book is highly recommended.
