The author, Irene Watson, tells her story of what she did to try and understand her childhood and the problems she endured along the way.

The opening chapter begins in a place called "Avalon". This is the recovery center where Irene went to try and sort things out. Avalon was located on an island connected to the mainland by a bridge. There was a resort community about a half-mile from Avalon.

Irene paid good money to be here. The first thing she noticed was a video camera in plain site which would record everything she did for the next twenty-eight days. Irene figured she would solve this problem. She searched through her suitcase and found a washcloth. She placed the washcloth over the lens. They were not going to invade her privacy.

Irene was born into a Ukrainian speaking family from Canada. Her brother died at a very young age and their mother was blamed for the death. The death left the family with much guilt.

As a result of the brother's death, Irene's world also became one of living with guilt and blame. This was due in part to the old Ukrainian culture. Her mother always kept a close eye on Irene.

The sitting swing was a rope hung from a tree made by their father. However, it was something the family could not even enjoy. Even while preparing food, Irene's mother would keep a close eye on her to make sure she didn't swing too high. Irene began to wonder if this was all there was to being a child - was she just supposed to sit there and never move?

The Sitting Swing is Irene Watson's compelling story of trying to understand her childhood. The author opens her thoughts to the reader almost as if she wants them to help her understand her childhood also. The book is a very interesting read. As the author states, it was very difficult to write this book and relive the past. The reader will do some deep thinking after reading Irene's story and see the courage it took for her to write this book. Irene's main purpose in writing this book is to inspire others to make changes in their lives. She has done an excellent job that will serve as an inspirational guide to many others who are trying to do the same thing in their lives. This book is highly recommended.
