BOOK REVIEW: A PALE HORSE |
Five boys set out to do something but find that the tables have turned on them. They planned to raise the devil with the help of an alchemy book stolen from their teacher. At first, the boys thought the devil must be busy somewhere else because he did not appear. After a few more tries with several spells, they were convinced they needed to get closer to the church wall. One boy began to scream and they were sure they had just seen the devil staring up at them with wide, blank eyes. They ran as fast as their trembling legs could carry them. They made a pact not to tell anyone what had happened.
The next morning a body is discovered by the abbey’s caretaker. The only clue was the alchemy book which was left behind by the terrified boys. The strange thing is the victim was wearing a gas mask.
Scotland Yard calls in Inspector Rutledge with the task of identifying the man along with figuring out why this person died under mysterious circumstances. Also, what was the reason for the gas mask?
Rutledge soon finds that he has been given an enormous task. Was the man killed as a cover up because of what he knew about Britain’s poison gas program? Is it possible that this was an act of revenge?
Now the puzzle is placed in the hands of Inspector Rutledge. He doesn’t have too many pieces to put together. Will he be able to figure this one out before it becomes too dangerous for him?
When I sit down to read a novel by the mother and son writing team called Charles Todd, I have come to expect the best. That is exactly what I got from the moment I started reading “A Pale Horse”. You are drawn right into the heart of this engrossing read. This novel is loaded with excellent characterization, a fast paced plot and an atmosphere that adheres perfectly to the storyline. If you are looking for an exciting “who dunit”, this is the book for you. I’m recommending it because I feel it is the best Charles Todd book yet!
