Sally Adler is a history professor in Laramie, Wyoming. When one of her students, Charlie, comes to her office it didn't take long for Sally to realize she had been beaten. Sally had seen many women in this condition. Back in her student days, she ran the University of Wyoming Women's Center which had taken calls for the local women's shelter.

Charlie did not want the police called nor did she want an ambulance. Sally offered Charlie some money and a coat. Sally begin to investigate Charlie's past and discovered she had been abused for years and was often placed in mental institutions.

Two weeks after Charlie disappears, her abusive father is found dead and the prime suspects are Charlie and her boyfriend.

Sally is racing against time to try and find Charlie before the police find her.
Is Charlie innocent or did she get to a point where she could not take any more abuse?

Hello, Stranger is loaded with plenty of action. Sally Adler is always willing to put her own life in danger in order to be able to help someone else. The characters are very believable and this is what makes Virginia Swift's novels so good. This is a well written book and one that I highly recommend.
