Billionaire Robert Magellan’s life has not been the same since his wife, Beth, and their son, Ian, disappeared. She took Ian with her to attend a family function and then left to return home. She never made it home and just seemed to vanish without a trace. Not even the car was found.
On a spring evening four high school students, three boys and a girl, met at a park in Conroy, Pennsylvania. The next day two of the boys are found shot to death. The third boy and the girl disappear. There are no leads as to their whereabouts. The Chief of Police begins to wonder whether they are victims or if they participated in the shooting.
Robert’s cousin, Father Kevin Burch, asks for his help in hiring a detective to investigate. The boy missing is the grandson of his parish secretary who maintains his innocence. Robert is not too enthused to get involved in this case considering what he went through in the investigation regarding his wife. He was questioned several times but reassured by the investigative team that the husband is always considered a suspect at first. Robert finally agrees to help.
Mallory Russo is an ex-cop who left the field after nine years due to scandal. She is now a true crime writer. Mallory does not really want to return to detective work but when an old friend recommends her, it is hard for her to refuse. She is intrigued by the case and wants to help.
Mallory soon has some help when Detective Charlie Wanamker, who left Conroy, returns due to a family situation. He is assigned to this case and unofficially teams up with Mallory to find the truth about what happened in the park that night.
Are Charlie and Mallory successful at finding out the truth?
This is the first book I have read by Mariah Stewart and I can say it will not be my last. I loved the team of Mallory and Charlie who are very likeable characters in the romantic suspense novel. The two of them work very well with each other and you can just see the closeness the two develop as the story goes on. There are several things going on in this novel at one time and that is what really keeps the reader on edge and makes this story captivating. Mercy Street is well written and fast paced. Be sure to add this novel to your reading list.
