BOOK REVIEW: BODY SURFING: A NOVEL
Does Sydney want to risk taking another chance on love? She has not had much luck with marriage. She is only 29 years old and already she is divorced from her first husband and ended up a widow due to the sudden death of her second husband.
Trying to once again gain control of her life, Sydney answers an ad to tutor Julie, the daughter of a well-to-do couple, who is considered to be "slow". She gets the tutoring job at their summer cottage in New Hampshire.
Sydney spends quite a bit of time with Julie. Sydney soon learns that Julie has a great deal of artistic talent. Something happens in Julie's life that turns out to be quite a surprise to her family. They had no idea!
In addition to Julie, the family also has two sons, Ben and Jeff. This is where things really begin to change for Sydney. Both brothers seem interested in Sydney. Something happens one night when the three were body surfing and this stays with Sydney throughout the book. What is it?
What happens to Sydney and this complicated relationship?
Anita Shreve uses a writing style in this book that is quite different from anything I have read. The sentences are short but they are to the point. I must say that I liked this style as it just seemed to peak my interest even more. As the author continues on with the story, she does a good job of building the suspense and the result ends up being a real page-turner. The ocean and cottage play an important role in the setting of this novel because they are two things that really bring this story together. The author also does an excellent job with character development. The reader will find that the characters seem very real. Anita Shreve does not disappoint with this latest addition to her list of novels. This book is highly recommended.
