BOOK REVIEW: THE LOVELY BONES |
|
|
A very different book. A fourteen-year-old girl who is killed by a serial rapist tells the story. Susie Salmon watches and narrates, from her perspective of heaven, the happenings over the next decade and a half of her family, friends, and her killer. As amazing as this sounds the more the story progresses the more enjoyable and almost believable it becomes.
Suzie’s death left behind a grieving mother who not only becomes involved with the lead detective on the case but the mother also tries a different approach to work out her problems. Suzie’s dad goes from being inconsolable to searching out the killer of his beloved daughter.
As Suzie’s sister and younger brother grow, the presence of their dead sister seems to be present but not obtrusive. She appears, mostly through feelings, and as a guide or mentor without interfering with their lives.
One of Suzie’s closest girl friends and also the only boy that Suzie ever kissed also witness the nearness and helpfulness of Suzie’s spirit. Their relationship becomes more entwined with the spirit of Suzie than that of any other character in the book.
The reaction of the neighborhood where the Salmon family lives also is displayed through Suzie’s eyes. How they react to the suspected killer and how they react to the sorrow of the Salmon family is a part of this entertaining by completely different book.
Very little of the killer’s life in this period of time is noted by the author and his comeuppance is hardly of any consequence. The author prefers to keep the story focused on the growth of the family and friends as seen by Suzie.
All of the changes that occur to friends and family seem to be the direct effect of their relationship to the Lovely Bones of the young victim.
The author has put together an interesting tale of grief, anxiety, and happiness as the characters grow in the years after a tragedy. Her approach is very different but it makes for an engrossing read that has the reader wondering about the possibility of interaction between souls or lives after death in a completely new light.
