Nate Rodriguez, still haunted by the death of his father, works as a sketch artist for the police department. Ever since the death of his father, a NARC killed on the job when Nate was very young, he has avoided being part of the actual police work even though he has been trained.
Nate is considered one of the best in his field. He is able to draw sketches even though there might not be too much available in the way of witnesses. He is even known to be able to enter the mind of the killer through his drawings.
Things are about to change for Nate. NYPD Homicide Detective, Terri Russo, enlists the help of Nate to find what appears to be a serial killer. No one has really seen the face of this killer and it is hoped Nate will be able to come up with a sketch. The killer always leaves a sketch of the victim at the scene which points to premeditation.
Through Nate's amazing ability, he is able to piece together a sketch piece by piece. As Nate's sketch is becoming more detailed, the killer is moving closer to him. Nate enlists the help of his grandmother who is devoted to the mystical religious rites of Santeria.
Is Nate able to solve this case? What else does Nate discover about the killer?
This novel is an excellent police procedural thriller that ends up being a cat and mouse game between Nate and the killer. There are several sketches throughout the book and the reader will get a good idea as to how Nate was able to put together the sketch of the killer piece by piece. There is plenty of action and the reader will be taken hostage by the author right from the very beginning. Jonathan Santlofer is one of the best writers around today. This book is highly recommended.
