BOOK REVIEW: WINTER IN MADRID
BY C.J. SANSOM

We hope you enjoy this book review by Jennifer Higgins.

Winter In Madrid is a masterfully written book of Historical Fiction. The author takes the reader back to the Spanish Civil War and WWII. We soon are introduced to four characters, Socialist Bernie, Apolitical Harry, Neural Barbara, and potentially a Franco leaning Sandy. All four, British citizens, whose destinies or fates are intertwined beautifully by the author.

The author takes the reader back through history, to an era forgotten by many, unknown to some, yet one that should be not only known by all but also never forgotten. Not since Hemmingway have I read such beautiful descriptions of Spain, as the scenery is described expertly by the author, bringing the reader into the novel as though right there along side the characters seeing what they see, smelling the smells, and feeling what they feel.

C.J.Sansom masterfully weaves together the intricate lives of very different individuals whose fates were predetermined. The motley crew is an unlikely one and yet while reading this novel one cannot help but feel as though one knows each character. From the main ensemble down to the lowliest, one cannot help but feel for them, as the author clearly intends.

Winter in Madrid is a must read for all who enjoy historical fiction and for anyone who enjoys a good suspense novel. This book will continue to keep the reader guessing until the very last pages. This is indeed a novel of love and loss, freedom and betrayal, and above all courage, in its many forms.
