Lucas Davenport is back - investigating a mysterious disappearance as a favor to his wife who is a friend of the missing woman's mother. Investigators have found blood stains indicating a vicious stabbing, but there is no other evidence. No body, no threatening notes, nothing.

With his colleagues, Davenport is balancing planning sessions for the Republican Convention; a stakeout at the apartment of a missing gangster; and the rather tedious procedures to find out more about the missing woman. But when a casual acquaintance of the missing woman is stabbed and left to die in an alley, Davenport begins to pay more attention and dig deeper. But everything he discovers leads to more questions.

In alternating chapters, the reader follows a mysterious couple through the Twin Cities, and observes a deadly game of cat and mouse as they remain one step ahead of Lucas and the other investigators. The answer to the entire puzzle lies in a bizarre mental aberration, and as the climax approaches, only the reader fully understands everything.

Vintage Sandford, and an entertaining read!
