BOOK REVIEW: DETECTIVE JERMAIN VOLUME I
BY MISAKO ROCKS

We hope you enjoy this book review by The Bookworm.

Seventeen year old Jermain is in her last year of high school. Both of her best friends, Andy the sweet, smart boy next door and Travis the popular football playing boy also next door, already know where they are heading after they finish school. But Jermain has yet to decide on a career path. When a student starts acting strange and is then followed shortly by other students and teachers, Jermain puts aside her worries about the future and begins searching for the cause of the school’s sudden zombie behavior. With her secretly-crushing-on-her best friends at her side, she sets her purposeful sights on figuring out this mystery… detective style.

Detective Jermain was a great graphic novel that had me glued to the pages. It was more than just a thick comic book. It had a story with enough dialogue and narration to keep you entertained the whole time while reading.

Immaculate Jermain was a great character. She was the clue putter-togetherer, the Velma in the Scooby-Doo equation. Though she was a great sleuth, she was unable to notice that the two people closest to her liked her. Maybe not completely realistic, but her pure surprise and slight uneasiness toward their statement made me like her even more. Jermain had an enthusiasm that just drew you in and instantly made you want to believe that you would have done the same thing in her place.

I loved how this book felt like a modern Scooby-Doo mystery aimed towards teenagers. They gathered clues and tried piecing together any possibilities. You couldn’t even guess who the culprit was until Jermain (the Velma) gave the big reveal at the end. The author completely pulled it off with a fun and fast Who-dun-it air.

I suggest this graphic novel to everyone, especially YA mystery/suspense lovers.
