This is a story about Nat Idle, a medical journalist. Nat was sitting in a cafe where he survives an explosion because someone passes him a note warning him to leave. He thinks that the note was written by his long dead girlfriend. Nat has been mourning his girlfriend for quite a while. Nat decides that he needs to begin a quest to solve the mystery of his girlfriends death.

This whole story takes place in Silicon Valley where virtually everything is done by computer. Nat's girlfriend was a venture capitalist in league with her father when she went missing.

Nat digs deeper and deeper into the missing girlfriend and finds that the company his girlfriend was hooked up with is using mind control on people with certain computer programs, he also finds out that his girlfriend is not dead after all.

Nat starts to get some really weird feelings after he has been working with the laptop. He eventually discovers the place where they are experimenting with lab rats and with the mind control programs.

This book is fiction, but it does stop and make you think. Are there really people out there that can control what you think and what you feel with computer programs? It really makes you stop and think when the book refers to the three words "You've got Mail" and you are just dying to get on with opening the emails to see just who wrote to you. And sometimes the computer does seem like it is becoming an addiction to a lot of people, especially with the emails and the games and the instant communication of today. There are a lot of people who spend hours and hours in front of their computers at work and when they get home they are on their computers for more hours in the evening. Although this is the author's first book, I found it very interesting and his point of view gives the reader something to really think about.
