Watchman was published in Britain in 1988 and is now available in the United States for the first time.

Things haven’t been going the best lately for Miles Flint, government spy. He has managed to mess up a few of his last assignments including one where a foreign official in London was killed.

There are many things going on within Miles’ agency and he needs to find out why. There have been many reassignments and why did the last suspect know more about Miles’ assignment than Miles did? Is Miles the person being “watched”?

Miles decides to do his own investigation to find out what is going on. It doesn’t take long for him to realize that he now needs to protect himself in order to survive.

Is Miles successful at finding out what is going on in the agency?

Although this novel is not quite up to par when compared to some of the Inspector Rebus novels, it is still a good read. Most of all, you can see clues that this author was on his way up the ladder to that of “bestselling author” one day. I feel the main thing this book lacked is the character development that has blossomed in Rankin’s later novels. Ian Rankin fans will still enjoy this book because it has all the excitement and intrigue of your normal spy novel.
