BOOK REVIEW: THE NIGHT GARDENER
What do three cops have in common when a body of a local teenager is found in a community garden?
These three cops worked together on a case twenty years ago that was never solved. At that time, Gus Ramone and his partner Dan "Doc" Holiday assisted detective T.C. Cook in his investigation of several killings involving young victims left overnight in neighborhood parks. This is how the killer got the title of "The Night Gardener".
This latest killing was so reminiscent of killings done by The Night Gardener. Is it possible that he has returned again after all these years to continue his slaughter of young victims?
The three cops all have different things going on in their lives now. Holiday left the force under a cloud of suspicion involving morals charges. Cook is retired but has not been able to stop thinking about the unsolved case. Ramone is working as a homicide detective for the city in the violent crime division. Ramone's son was a friend of the recent victim.
These three men are now back together to try and solve this case that has been on their minds all these years. All three have something in common - something to prove once and for all for themselves and for their careers.
Are these three men successful the second time around in trying to solve the case of "The Night Gardener"?
George Pelecanos has written a novel that has everything a reader could possibly want in a book. It is fast moving, suspenseful and captivating. The author does an excellent job of taking the reader through the lives of the three cops as to where they have been and where they are now going. You can feel the intensity of how important it is for these three to be able to solve the case the second time around. This novel will engross the reader. Be sure to add it to your reading list.
