BOOK REVIEW: THE BIG SHUFFLE
They say your life can change overnight and that is exactly what happened to Hallie Palmer.
Hallie, who is away at college, is having the time of her life. She enjoys playing strip poker and having a few drinks at the same time. Her friend, Bernard, tracked her down at one of these parties. He informed Hallie that her father had a heart attack and they needed to get to the hospital as soon as possible.
When Hallie and Bernard arrive at the hospital, they are given the bad news. Hallie's father died from a massive coronary and her mother is in a state of shock and would have to be kept at the hospital for a couple of days.
Well, things just get worse for Hallie. Her mother is incapacitated from all of this and is not capable of taking care of the eight children at home and is sent to a rehabilitation place to recover. Hallie's brother, Eric, is away at college on a full scholarship. There is no choice but for Hallie to leave college and come home to take care of the younger siblings.
Hallie does receive some help from the women in the town. Another person who helps out is the pastor.
Does Hallie manage to meet this challenge that has been handed to her?
Even though this book involves a very serious subject, Laura Pedersen handles it in much the same way as in her other books - with a delightful touch of comedy. This book also includes many of the same characters as with her other books and this just makes the book such a great read because you will love Bernard and Gil. Bernard is such a great friend to Hallie and he proves it by what he did during Hallie's father's funeral. It is a very touching moment. Be sure to add this book to your reading list. After you read this book, you will also want to read "Beginner's Luck" and "Heart's Desire". Fans of this series are in for a special treat!
