Larry Kaplanski, a volunteer who leaves the U.S. to teach at Farm Goas, narrates this story.

Mavala Shikongo, is the only single female teacher at the school and all the males tried hard not to fall in love with her but it was not easy. She is also a former combat veteran of Namibia's war for independence. Many were not surprised when she left but they figured she had something to hide.

Then, to everyone's surprise, Mavala returned. This time, however, she was not alone. She had a son but no husband with her. Once again, she has captivated the men at Farm Goas, especially American Larry Kaplanski.

What happens with the relationship between Larry and Mavala?

Although somewhat complex, this is a captivating and powerful novel. Peter Orner is a master at using words in order to get his points across to the reader. The character of Mavala adds a mystery to the story that will keep the reader engrossed in the plot. The author does an excellent job of describing what was going on at the time a country was going through independence and all the problems the people faced. Be sure to add this book to your reading list. It will make you do some thinking!
