How can people that youíve known and loved change suddenly and become someone you donít know and donít understand? Jack Whalen, an author and ex-police officer is trying to find an answer to this question.

Before he reaches a conclusion he goes through one of the worst living nightmares that an individual can endure.

Gary Fisher, an old high school acquaintance, comes to Jack and asks for his help in an investigation he is trying to conduct. Gary is an attorney and represented a client, now deceased, that had a huge estate. Gary is confused by the fact that another law firm has stepped in with a will that takes precedence over the one in Garyís possession and is totally different than what Gary expected. Although his client left some money to his family he left large sums to various agencies and communities. One of the individuals that he left a large sum of money to is Bill Anderson a physics professor. Billís wife and son have been murdered and their house set on fire. Bill has disappeared and is the main suspect. Gary is convinced of his innocence.

Jack turns Gary down at first but then becomes curious because Gary hints that he has some information about Amy, Jackís wife. Amy has been acting very strangely and has even been out of Jackís radar for days at a time which is not normal.

A little girl disappears from home and is thought to be kidnapped but is traveling on her own and acting very adult-like.

Jack begins to pull all of these separate threads together and comes to a very startling discovery. Some people canít really call their lives their own.

This book is very dark and full of menace. The book gives you a lot to think about Ė particularly if you wake from a nightmare.
