THE SURROGATE - KATHRYN MACKEL

Kyle and Bethany Dolan are a very lucky young couple in every way but one.  Kyle is a good businessman who makes a very comfortable living for the couple.  Bethany is a talented musician.  The couple share a deep faith in God.  They have been blessed with good friends including Nora Henlow who is a doctor and her husband David and their children.  They have become close to the Martinez family consisting of Joan and her two children Anthony and Jacob.  Anthony has a wonderful voice and in Bethany's opinion will someday be a famous singer.  Joan is working hard to better her family and keep her younger son Jacob off the streets.

The flaw in Kyle and Bethany's almost perfect life is the fact that they have no children.  They want a family of their own but Bethany hasn't been able to successfully carry a baby to term.  Finally in desperation Bethany agrees with Kyle to hire a surrogate to carry their baby to term.

Sable Lynde is a young, very intelligent woman with a tragic past.  Sable's computer skills lead her to the information that some voice-mail providers allow users to make calls from anywhere and charge it to their corporate accounts.  She has sold phone numbers for a $400.00 fee giving people unlimited calls for a year.  Sable has banked almost a million dollars from this scam.  But Sable is being chased by Bernard DuBois who had provided her with start-up funds and Cade who is wanting in on the payoff. Sable also is trying to escape from her tragic past and memories that won't go away.  Needing a place to drop out of sight for a few months until things settled down Sable creates an identity for herself of Laurel Bergin and applied for the position of surrogate and was accepted.

Although the pregnancy begins on a happy note strange things begin to happen and by the time the baby is born Kyle and Bethany have been through experiences almost too frightening to endure.  Bethany comes close to having a nervous breakdown.  Kyle is tempted to do things that were beyond his imagination a few months earlier.  Bethany and Kyle's faith in God and the friends that have become like family eventually help them endure the nightmares that have become real.

This book is quite different and full of suspense and you are left to wonder long after you've finished the book if things like this can really happen in our world today.
