BOOK REVIEW: WHAT THE DEAD KNOW: A NOVEL
How can a family survive the nightmare of their two daughters disappearing from a mall one day?
In 1975, Sunny and Heather Bethany, wanted to spend the day at the mall. Their parents allowed them to take the bus. When their father arrived later on that day to pick them up, they were nowhere in sight. What happened to them?
Over the years, as with many kidnappings, etc. there were reports of false sightings, ransom demands and hoaxes.
Thirty years later, an accident occurs in Baltimore, Maryland. The woman involved in the accident is arrested after leaving the scene. She has no identification. The woman tells the hospital social worker that she is Heather Bethany. Detective Kevin Infante who is assigned to investigate the case, does not believe the woman's story. The social worker does believe the woman is telling the truth. The woman soon becomes uncooperative and stonewalls the investigation. Why?
Is the woman telling the truth or she is some psycho? Is Detective Infante successful at solving this case?
Laura Lippman has written an excellent police procedural novel that is intense and moving at the same time. The author does a magnificent job of moving the story back and forth in time to give the reader an idea as to what was happening many years ago and weaves it together with everything that is going on now. The end result is a novel that is a thriller and one the reader will want to continue reading until they find out if this woman is telling the truth. This book is highly recommended and one you should add to your reading list.
