BOOK REVIEW: HARDLY KNEW HER
BY LAURA LIPPMAN

We hope you enjoy this book review by Teri Davis.

Any novel Laura Lippman has written always seems to be outstanding and memorable. So I was hesitant about reading this collection of her short stories. I was shocked and pleasantly pleased by this collection of outstanding stories which have the power to literally pull the reader immediately inside of each one.. Another plus for me was that I could never predict the events or endings of these stories. The twists in them reminded me of the short-story master, O'Henry.

Most of the stories are woman oriented and are set in the Baltimore area. She does venture a little into other settings including the southwest, Dublin, and New Orleans. Also each story makes me a further believer that Laura Lippman is a natural-born storyteller. She just tells her stories in the print form. It seems as if she senses when the reader might begin to drift and purposefully steers the plot into a different direction.

What makes each story a gift is the masterful and believable characters she has developed. You can really visualize the characters and the actions as if you were observing the events.

The themes in some of these stories are at times comical, at other times, terrifying. For instance one of the stories discussing losing weight through using cocaine. Another is about an upscale prostitute and her sister in keeping their lifestyle together but also private. There is also a senior citizen prom, a Mardi Gras costume entitled "Pony Girl", and other ones with Tess Mohagham who is the protagonist in many of Lippman's previous mystery novels.

Laura Lippman is an award-winning author who started writing as a journalist in Baltimore and now focuses strictly on her fiction writing.

For anyone who enjoys short well-written stories, HARDLY KNEW HER is definitely a must read. My only regret with the book was that at 340 pages, it was too short.
