Sara Laden is a young widow who is having some problems since her husband's death. Her son, Nate, who is in high school, has been having behavior problems since his father died. He seems to be getting into constant trouble. Her younger son, Danny, is having trouble with his remedial classes. In addition to these problems, Sara must manage to support her household by running a catering business from her home.

These problems turn out to be nothing compared to what Sara discovers. Sara's best friend, Courtney, has always been there for her and really helped after the death of Sara's husband. Courtney and Mark have a son named Jordan. Jordan and Danny were best friends but lately something seems to have changed. Jordan appears to be very withdrawn. One morning, Sara finds Jordan alone and ill. She took him to the hospital and it turned out to be a suicide attempt - an overdose. It was also discovered that Jordan had been sexually abused for years. Courtney's husband has disappeared and she is arrested. A search of the house discovers incriminating evidence toward Mark but nothing showing Courtney was involved. Sara's oldest son suggests they take in Jordan while his mother is waiting for trial.

Is Courtney innocent? Can the Laden family help Jordan through the healing process from this traumatic experience?

Although it is not easy to read about child abuse, this is a compelling novel. It just goes to prove that sometimes we might think we know someone but really don't know them at all. This is a heartbreaking story but the author has the writing skill that will hold the reader until the very end of the book. The author provides several statistics regarding child abuse. She does an excellent job with character development where you can just feel the pain that each one is going through as they learn what has happened to Jordan over the years. This book is highly recommended.
