It is often said that one picture is worth a thousand words. This book really does fulfill that saying.
Photographer Jason Miccolo Johnson is responsible for putting this book together. He did so by traveling across the country and visiting all kinds of churches including rural, urban, large inner city and suburban mega-churches. During his travels, he ended up with 15,000 photographs. He has included 165 of them in this book.
The photographs, all in black and white, really capture the enthusiasm of the black church. There are several essays included and each picture has a caption explaining what is happening at the moment the picture was taken.
The photographer does an excellent job of capturing the spirit of the black people and what their church means to them. You can just see this enthusiasm on their faces and in their body language. You almost don't need the caption because their facial expressions really come through on the photos and you get a good idea as to what is taking place even before you read the detailed description.
This is a book where you don't have to do a lot of reading. Just look at the beautifully illustrated photographs and you will see the whole story of the black church right before your eyes. This book is highly recommended.
