Emma and Jacob have been married only three weeks when Nazis invade Poland. Jacob disappears to help the resistance and Emma is taken to Krakow to live with her cousin, Krysia. It is also necessary for her to take on a new identity as Anna Lipowski.

Emma is soon introduced to Kommandant Richwalder who hires her to work as his personal assistant. Emma knows she should not feel this way but she is drawn to the Kommandant. She soon gains his trust and is urged by the resistance to use her position to gain more details of the Nazi occupation.

This places Emma in a position of risking not only her safety but also her marriage. What does Emma decide to do and what does her future hold?

This is a compelling historical novel that will engross the reader from the very first page. The author does a tremendous job of providing the reader with feelings of what it was like during WWII and what was happening to the Jews in Poland. The author also does an excellent job of telling Emma's story and the readers will feel like they are taking every step with her as she goes along to help the resistance. The characters are well drawn and the reader will almost feel sorry for the Kommandant. It is very obvious that Pam Jenoff is a talented writer. Be sure to add The Kommandant's Girl to your reading list. It is highly recommended.
