Police Chief Lew Ferris and the rest of the Loon Lake gang are back for Houston's ninth mystery, Dead Hot Shot. Once again, death interrupts some perfectly good fishing for fishing guide Ray Pradt and retired dentist Doc Osborne. Most of the folks in Loon Lake had plans for Thanksgiving that involved nothing more complicated than whether to have the pumpkin or the pecan pie. But Loon Lake's residents were to have their perfectly planned holiday ruined by a series of unfortunate events.

First there was Nolan Reece's odd disappearance during her daughter's engagement party Thanksgiving Eve. The party was an event Nolan had planned down to the last detail so it was definitely out of character for her to not stick around until the end to pay the caterers and other help. Then, when she's found floating in the lake the next morning, it was thought to be a tragic accident. But later when another person is found dead, this time clearly murdered, the perfectly planned Thanksgiving is over for Loon Lake.

What makes the Loon Lake series so wonderful, what sets the series apart from so many others, is the very human, very real characters Houston has in her books. Doc and Lew, Ray and Gina, the store owner Mildred, and the rest, are all people found in any tightly knit community in America. Readers can readily connect with the characters so they are immediately drawn into the book. Who hasn't known a controlling mother like Nolan Reese? Or a couple who bicker like the Merrills? And don't we all have a favorite store like Mildred's that's cluttered from top to bottom with anything you could ever dream of needing?

Another obvious draw to the books is the lovely setting by the lake. Although this book is set Thanksgiving weekend, reading it is still like taking a weekend trip to the lake. Each of the books in this series can be read as a stand alone, but heed this fair warning, once you've visited Loon Lake, you'll want to dig up all of the previous books as well.
