Sometimes things happen to you in life that make the once important priorities seem unimportant. This is what happened to these three women.

Vicki, her sister Brenda, and their friend Melanie arrive at Nantucket airport. They are there to spend the summer together to sort through their problems. Each has a very different one. Vicki has been diagnosed with lung cancer. She wanted to come to Nantucket to spend the summer at the family beach house with her two young children. Brenda has been fired from the college where she was teaching because she had an affair with a student. Melanie has been trying for years to get pregnant. She is now pregnant but discovered that her husband is cheating.

Josh Flynn, a college student, works at the airport during his summer break. This is how he met the three women. Brenda asks Josh to baby-sit for Vickiís children and the three women soon realize how much they have come to depend on him. He not only baby-sits for Vickiís children which gave her more free time but encourages Brenda with her writing and challenges Melanie to follow her heart. These four people soon realize they all need each other.

What becomes of these four people who have come together during a summer in Nantucket?

Barefoot is a wonderful story of friendship and love. The reader will feel sympathy for Vicki but not for the other women. This is one of those books that consume the reader and you will want to continue on to find out what happens to each person. Elin Hilderbrand does an excellent job of intertwining the lives of these four people with the end result being one of a very memorable story. Be sure to add Barefoot to your reading list and check out the interesting book cover.
