BOOK REVIEW: BABY CRIMES |
Most attorneys establish an office in as nice a building as they can afford in the hopes that the façade will attract wealthy clients. Toby Dillon isn’t concerned about wealthy clients. His office is the former storage room of the pro shop of the Coral Canyon Country Club. Toby doesn’t have much overhead since he is also assistant tennis pro at the Club. He resides at the club as well. His digs aren’t magnificent but they meet Toby’s needs.
Even with such an unusual office for a lawyer Toby does manage to attract a couple of wealthy clients. Nevin and Catherine Handley are very, very rich. Their daughter Lynn is one of Toby’s students. Toby’s specialty is adoptions and Lynn was adopted by Nevin and Catherine sixteen years ago. They just conveniently overlooked the legal aspects of an adoption. Lynn has no idea that she is adopted let alone that the adoption wasn’t quite legal.
Toby accepts the case even though he has reservations. Nevin and Catherine have been pushed to the decision to try and proceed with the adoption due to some blackmail notes they have been receiving. Toby’s affection for Lynn who is like a little sister helps him make the decision to take the case and protect Lynn in any way that he can.
His investigation gets him in more trouble than he has ever expected from an adoption case. He finds that Nevin has been involved with some venture capitalists and just knowing that fact puts Toby in danger.
Toby has been working on his relationship with Rita MacGilroy, a friend from childhood and the widow of his buddy Brogan Barlow. The case does nothing to further his progress with Rita.
Baby Crimes is a story of love, murder, and compassion. The book is also full of humor. It made me happy, sad and made me laugh. I loved the characters and want to read more books by Randall Hicks.
