BOOK REVIEW: PIG ISLAND
BY MO HAYDER

We hope you enjoy this book review by Patricia Reid.

Joe Oakes is fascinated with the video called the “devil of Pig Island”. Joe is a journalist and makes his living exposing supernatural hoaxes. Joe is certain that the video is a hoax or a prank of some kind but he can’t decide on a good explanation for the details in the video. When Joe is given an opportunity to visit Pig Island and interview the residents there he jumps at the chance. A cult known as Psychogenic Healing Ministries makes the group’s headquarters on Pig Island, a remote island off the West Coast of Scotland.

Malachi Dove is the founder of the cult and Joe and Malachi have a history dating back many years. Joe is anxious to once again face Malachi and do whatever he can to make Malachi miserable. Malachi harbors the same resentments against Joe. When Joe finally arrives on the island he finds that Malachi has cut himself off from the rest of the cult and is living in isolation. An isolation that Joe is determined to disturb.

Joe’s wife Lexie has insisted on traveling with Joe although Joe did his best to discourage her from coming. Lexie does not go to the island with Joe but stays in their rented cottage while Joe meets the residents of Pig Island. Lexie has an agenda of her own which Joe will soon discover.

Meanwhile back on the island Joe is seeking a strange creature with a tail that appears on the video. The cult members are secretive. Malachi is in hiding. Joe is beginning to feel there is danger at every turn.

Pig Island is terrifying as well as enlightening. It is not for the faint hearted reader. The descriptions are so realistic that the reader can see the horror and feel the terror that exists on the island. The story behind the video is fascinating. The book came to an end too soon.
