Poke Rafferty was good at looking for trouble. What good did this do for him? Well, he made some money writing some travel guides for the young and terminally bored. Grant you; these are not your normal type travel guides. The series was appropriately called "Looking for Trouble". The topics included in the guides were items like "How to Beat Exchange Rates", "How to Bribe A Cop" and "How to Spot Counterfeit Jewels" just to name a few. Get the picture?

Poke fell in love with Bangkok. He also fell in love with Rose, a former go-go dancer. Poke was hoping to marry rose one day. He was also very fond of Miaow, a street child he wanted to adopt. Everything was starting to turn around for Poke. His life was looking better than ever.

Trouble, once again, came looking for Poke. It all began when he took in Miaow's friend, a troubled street boy named Superman. He then gets involved in helping an Aussie woman find her missing uncle because he needed the money. If this wasn't enough, Poke then agreed to accept a woman's offer to find a blackmailing thief. His assignment is to find the man who stole an envelope and return it to her. One big stipulation - Poke must not open the envelope.

Poke soon realizes that everything is starting to overlap and he is getting in much deeper than he ever anticipated to the point that it could endanger everyone that he loves.

Timothy Hallinan does an excellent job with the descriptions of Bangkok and everything that is taking place there. It is very obvious that the author has a great deal of knowledge about the Far East as this comes through in his writing. A Nail Through the Heart proves to the reader that Timothy Hallinan is a tremendous writing talent. There is plenty of mystery in the story to keep the reader engrossed and some very colorful characters to make this novel an entertaining read. I highly recommend this book and look forward to the next book by Timothy Hallinan.
