Why do some people life longer in other countries? What are they doing that is different?
This is not an anti-aging book. The main purpose of this book is to help readers extend their active life. As Dr. Gupta points out, most people would not want to live longer if their quality of life was not good. As we all know, there are loads of information available on this subject and some of it is conflicting. Dr. Gupta shows us the most effective choices available to improve our health and longevity.
One of the most interesting places for researchers is Okinawa. Heart disease, stroke and cancer occur at a lower frequency here than anywhere in the world. In addition, prostate cancer is unusual and breast cancer is very rare. Why? This should really tell us something. Okinawans work very hard for one thing. They do not know the meaning of "retirement". Their diet is rich in fruits and vegetables and unrefined carbohydrates. They eat fish several times a week, plenty of brown rice and consume minimal amounts of dairy products, fats, meat and sugar. One of the main things they don't believe in doing is to continue eating until full. They believe in eating until they are only 80% full. So eating less appears to be one of the key factors to longevity.
Dr. Gupta includes a very interesting chapter regarding stem cell research in Russia that the reader will find fascinating.
As for the vitamin supplements many people are taking, Dr. Gupta states, "most Americans are falling short of the recommended daily allowances of vitamins A, C, and E and minerals calcium, magnesium and potassium. " He agrees that these people would benefit from a multivitamin with minerals. On the other hand, many Americans are taking too many vitamins and as a result are wasting their money.
Dr. Gupta stresses that one of the most important things a person most do is to exercise their mind. Mental exercise such as word games are good.
Dr. Gupta believes there is one single exercise technique that could be sufficient to prolong life? What is it?
Chasing Life is a fascinating book to read. It is an easy and interesting read that you could easily get through in one sitting. It is packed with some very helpful information about improving your health and longevity. The section I really liked about this book is called "Paging Dr. Gupta". It summarizes the important points of the chapter and as a result the information will stay with the reader as you go on to the next chapter. There are also "tidbits" of information listed throughout the book that are highlighted for the reader in a gray colored block. Be sure to pick up a copy of Chasing Life. It is a very informative book and I highly recommend it.
