BOOK REVIEW: GONE
BY MICHAEL GRANT

We hope you enjoy this book review by The Bookworm.

One second they are there. The next second gone. Every parent, every teacher, every adult, everyone over the age of 14... Gone. All of a sudden Perdido Beach is surrounded by a spherical wall, keeping the children in with no adults to keep peace. The wrath of bullies is unleashed. Babies are left unattended. Children are in car accidents because the driver just disappeared. They have a limited amount of food. There is no 911, no one to rescue them. But that isnít the worst thing happening to the ungoverned kids of Perdido Beach. Some of them are changing. Insane. Impossible abilities. And these new deadly abilities are not just happening to the good guys.

Gone was an amazing, brilliant book. This book has no cons. Every gnawing sentence on every gripping page had your full, undaunting attention. Lord of the Flies to the most horrific extreme. There was a clear good vs. evil battle going on. The evil was truly evil, not just some bullies calling people names. These bullies were ruthless, arrogant, self-preserving want-to-be dictators. The good was easy to discern. Every child, be it a preschooler or teenager, knew which side was good.. They knew where to run to if they needed help and who to trust in a time of need. The good guys were strong, merciful, humble, self-sacrificing unintentional heroes.

The characters had emotions and feelings and beliefs that made them into people. You were able to feel horrified and disgusted at the evil being committed. You hoped with all your might that the humble, good guys would win in the end.

Gone showed a new light on parents also. Many TV shows and books in these days represent adults as dumb, not only dumb but unnecessary. The Perdido Beach kidsí new found respect and need for adults was a huge restoration to once disrespected parents. The children had no one to make meals, to change diapers, to bandage the wounded, to hug them and tell them it was going to be alright, and to govern them and punish the bullies for the evil they did.

Gone is an amazing novel that is now my favorite and a book I suggest to everyone.
