BOOK REVIEW: THE DEAD MAN
BY JOEL GOLDMAN
We hope you enjoy this book review by
I am a fan of Joel Goldman and I thoroughly enjoy reading anything he writes. I was thrilled when I got to read The Dead Man.
The premise for The Dead Man is actually quite interesting. Controversial Milo Harper has set up a huge foundation - dedicated to understanding people's dreams, which he believes, can be directly related to stem cells and their benefit to, among other diseases, Parkinson and Alzheimers. However, there has been some serious happenings at the Foundation - as two of their patients have died - under what appear to be normal circumstances, yet Harper is not sure - so he hires Jack Davis to investigate.
Davis has his own history and his own demons - including a daughter who died of a drug overdose while being accused of stashing away stolen money. Davis, a former investigator, had resigned since his daughter's death and there are still many rumors swirling around him. On top of all that, Davis has his own reasons for wanting Harper to succeed.
As I said, this premise is interesting and certainly topical. I liked the fact that although Davis agrees to work for Harper - there is no love lost between the two - both need to get to the same end goal, but their methods of getting there are quite different.
Goldman has a way of creating characters that I always enjoy. They are always flawed and somewhat unpredictable (like Jack's new roomate) and the backstory he gives each character just adds to the storyline. Goldman's strongest asset, I believe is his character driven view of a plotline.
As for the storyline itself, it moves at a good clip and there are more than just a few twists and turns in this road.
However, and this is a first for me with Goldman - I actually figured out the murderer very early on in this book - which kind of removed some of the fun out of it for me. I was very, very certain I was right and as it turned out - I was!
Still, this is a great read, where nobody is really who they appear to be. You will thoroughly enjoy this story.
