BOOK REVIEW: A VOYAGE BEYOND REASON
BY TOM GAUTHIER

We hope you enjoy this book review by Mary Z.

Wow! Thatís the only word which describes this marvelous book. It is one you will hate to see end and will try to sparingly read to the finish. This is a story of a young manís journey into the unknown physical, mental, and, spiritual realms.

Dr. Gauthier was surveying the Rio San Juan in South America in 1998. He took a ride to nearby Punta Charambira and on its cliff saw a broken kayak paddle and something protruding from the ground. It was a journal from someone named Benjamin Wade. Tom took them home and thus starts a search for this remarkable man.

In 1996, Ben Wade was twenty-four years old but already felt used and abused by the world. He had an idea in the Mojave Desert that he would like to kayak from Baja, California to Columbia, South America because his father had often talked about the continent and, more importantly, to see if he could do it. So he begins thinking he is in great shape and ready for any emergency that could come up.

He quickly runs into trouble. The Sea of Cortez is not the placid little bay he thought it was and he leaves during hurricane season which only worsens his plight. He gets tired of paddling, is cold and hungry, and more than anything wants to quit. That ugly word and his family and friendsí, ďI-told-you Ėthat- you -couldnít-do-itĒ faces propel him on.

Ben develops a love-hate relationship with the ocean. He discovers many interesting places and people along the way. The most important find is himself and his place in the world. Mr. Wade started this adventure looking for something, disillusioned with everything, and found the greatest treasure of all, his worth and what is truly important in life.

Tom Gauthier has taken Benís notes and fleshed out the experiences of this man. The result is an extraordinary adventure, outward and inward. I donít want to give too much away but, please, if there is only one book you will read this year, read this one. It will entertain you and make you think.
