BOOK REVIEW: BURIED STRANGERS
BY LEIGHTON GAGE

We hope you enjoy this book review by Caryn St. Clair.

Soho Press Crime book series are, to a one, set in “exotic” locales. Readers can be swept away to such places as Laos, Italy, France, Tibet, Sweden and many others, without leaving the comforts of their homes. The Chief Inspector Mario Silva series by Leighton Gage, takes readers to Brazil, a country of sharp contrasts between the old and the new, city and jungle, native peoples and immigrants.

Imagine an urban park in the middle of a large metro area that is so overgrown it is more jungle than park. It is in just such an place that Gage's second Silva mystery, Buried Strangers, opens. A dog brings a human bone to it's caretaker. When the man investigates, he finds the partially exposed skull of a buried body. When the police arrive, they in turn find an entire cemetery of bodies buried on the hillside. A cemetery hidden from view for many years by the thick plant growth. While attempting to unravel the case, Chief Inspector must work through many theories as to where the bodies came from and who killed them. Are the bodies in the cemetery the work of a serial killer or are they people who just vanished because of their political leanings or ethnic background? Could they be the remains of illegal organ harvesting?

The setting, of Buried Strangers makes it much more than the average police procedural. While Chief Inspector Silva struggles with the case, readers are given an interesting look at Brazilian society. We “see” the police corruption and how it is an accepted part of doing business. We learn of the deep rooted divisions between the various ethnic groups that go back generations. Gage uses his characters to reflect the varied mix of people in Brazilian society. His plots draw attention to the religious and political struggles caused by the that cultural mix. Together, they make a riveting read.
