Miss Helma Zukas lives an extremely orderly life. Her day is planned down to the minute, her apartment is as neat as can be with everything in its place and her car is immaculate. She has clearly defined ideas as to how the library where she is on staff should run. She knows what her job is and she does it to perfection. Unfortunately, Miss Zukas lives in a world that is not as attuned to routines, schedules and perfection as she.

As a case in point, meet Ruth. Ruth is everything that Miss Zukas is not. She is a wild, spur of the moment, messy artsy sort of person, who happens to be Helma's best friend. As Index to Murder, the seventh Miss Zukas library mystery opens, Ruth is trying to recover from a failed romance by staging a show of her paintings depicting her life. Unfortunately, two of the paintings are stolen. While the paintings are only abstracts of Ruth's feelings about her relationships, the fact that the two missing pictures are of her former lovers who happen to be dead raises some red flags to the police. Who would be afraid to have these paintings shown publicly? Who even knew these paintings existed? Could there possibly be a connection between the two men's supposedly accidental deaths? Miss Zukas quickly finds herself involved in trying to figure out the answers to these questions.

While the mystery is certainly the main reason to read the book, Miss Zukas fans will also enjoy the side stories as well. Ms May Apple Moon, the Library Director, falls while trying to find a pamphlet for the mayor. However, her behavior after her accident soon has people wondering if Ms Moon staged the incident for her own agenda. Then there is the problem with Helma's apartment complex. The owner has decided to sell out and retire. Will Miss Zukas and Boy Cat have to move? Fans of the series will be pleased that the entire cast of regulars, including Boy Cat, her Aunt Em and mother are also very much present in this book.
