The First Sandcastle is a most interesting novel of human interaction in a family with strong shadings from another culture. A young boy, from an early age, observes and tries to understand his parentsí interaction with each other. His coexistence with his younger sister at times is mind boggling to him. His extraordinary talent in drawing makes him different from his peers. Without the support and understanding he needs and craves from his parents tend to make him an insecure and lonely kid. His schoolmates, many of whom come from a better socio economic background, find him a little strange in his ways - his discovery of girls and his feelings of inadequacy for so many reasons. The entire book is a very interesting account of one boy's maturing from a six year old to a young man. His fascination with sandcastles stems from an afternoon he spent on the beach in his Dad's company. Dad is a solid family man, of a different culture, with strong work ethics who provides very well for his family and respects his wife. In expressing emotion this man is a bust.

I would recommend this book. It is fast moving, emotional and enlightening. Growing up is difficult for any child and even more so for a young boy from another culture living in the USA. The pressures are intense. One needs to live in harmony with one's parents and learn very quickly about and of the American way. This is a tall order. The tall order part is what makes this book so interesting.
