BOOK REVIEW: DON OF THE DEAD
"Hey, doll baby!" Gus Scarpetti called to Pepper Martin as she was in the cemetery giving a talk on "Cleveland's Famous Dead". Since Pepper knew that Gus Scarpetti was murdered 30 years ago and was buried in the spot where he was standing Pepper thought she was losing her mind.
Pepper took the job at Garden View Cemetery to have an income until she could find something more suitable. She had never had to worry about money but when her father was sent to prison for Medicare fraud and her rich boy friend dumped her she had to get a job but conversing with the dead was not a part of her job description.
Gus explained to Pepper that he had unfinished business to settle before he could move on to his final resting place. When Gus refused to quit following around Pepper finally decided to help Gus in searching for the person or persons who had murdered him.
Pepper started contacting Gus' family and past acquaintances. As soon as she started the investigation bad things started happening to her. It seemed that no matter how bad Gus wanted to uncover the truth there were others that wanted it kept a secret.
Besides having to deal with Gus, and feeling threatened by the mob, she is torn between two men that have shown a romantic interest in her. One is a doctor and wants to study her brain for a paper that he is writing. The other man is a detective.
Pepper is a likeable character and I look forward to reading future books in the series.
