The Alpine Advocate is Emma Lord's weekly newspaper that keeps folks up to date on everything happening in the community. Ed Bronsky, who worked as a former ad manager at the Alpine Advocate, stopped in to ask for his old job back. Ed quit his job at the paper because he inherited some money from his aunt. It seems he made some very bad investments and was now broke. Ed was informed that he could not have his old job back because his replacement, Leo Walsh, was doing a fine job.

Emma receives something in the mail that same morning that was quite shocking but she figured it had to be some kind of error. An envelope dated January 4th, contained a formal obituary announcing the death of Alpiner Elmer Nystrom on January 6th. How can this be? Everyone knew Elmer was just fine but he did not turn up for work. Emma and one of her editors, Vida Runkel, go to Elmer's home where they find his body in the henhouse.

Who would want to kill Elmer? He was well liked by everyone. However, his wife and son were not too well liked.

Many questions and rumors start to fly. Sheriff Milo is in the hospital so it is up to Emma and Vida to find out what has happened.

Are these two amateur sleuths successful at finding out who murdered Elmer?

It is hard to believe that this is number nineteen in this delightful series. The Alpine Scandal is a fun read that will keep the reader engrossed and make them change their mind several times. Emma and Vida are two very likeable characters that add humor to the story. If you are a fan of the cozy mystery, this is one you don't want to pass on. I highly recommend this book.
