What is so different about Covert, Michigan? The answer is "something extraordinary".
In the 1860's when racism was everywhere, the people in this town decided this would be a place where the citizens, black and white, would live as equal members of the community. If they had to break laws and social expectations in order to do this, it would be done. As a result, schools and churches were integrated, blacks and whites married and power and wealth were shared. "A Stronger Kinship" is the story of the citizens of this town.
Why didn't we hear about this story before? The pioneers of Covert did such a good job of making racial equality their norm that later generations did not think there was anything special about their community.
The author, Anna-Lisa Cox, does an excellent job of pointing out how the people in this town were shameful as to what was going on around them. It is obvious that the author spent much of her time doing research to be able to write this book and give the reader an insight of this period in our history. She used private diaries, overlooked documents, oral histories and contemporary records. This is an intriguing read, not only for someone interested in history, but for all readers. It just goes to show that if a group is determined to put certain feelings and beliefs aside, they can accomplish anything they set out to do. This book is highly recommended.
