BOOK REVIEW: NOTHING TO LOSE
BY LEE CHILD

As faithful readers of this series know, Jack Reacher is not a man to back down from a fight. A retired miliary policeman, Reacher has enough savvy, attention to the smallest of details, and sympathy for the underdog to make him a Lone Ranger for the 21st century.

In previous books, Reacher has encountered a misjustice of some kind; a defenseless person made more downtrodded; an innocent caught up in violent circumstances; or an appeal from someone who knows his reputation for being able to help in impossible circumstances. In this latest entry, it seems that Reacher goes looking for trouble and when he finds trouble, persists in making it worse. Although Child has still dished up a suspenseful read, NOTHING TO LOSE falls short of the mark he set in earlier books.

Traveling across country from the east coast to San Diego, on a roughly diagonal line, Reacher comes to an isolated group of small Colorado prairie towns. His established pattern of carrying no luggage, no wallet, and no ID except an expired passport arouses the suspicion of local law enforcement. The cops in one town throw him in jail on a trumped up vagrancy charge, and the battle is on. After his release, when he discovers a desicated body in the nearby scrub brush, Reacher cannot resist the impulse to pester the power structure in the town until it collapses.

Eventually Reacher discovers a highly secretive recycling operation and begins to understand that the local residents are held in a restrictive "company town" employment situation. But there is more behind the hostility, and the intersecting and somewhat contradictory secrets are part of the puzzle.

Of course, there is an honest, attractive female cop from one of the less hostile towns in the area who decides to help. And of course, she is hiding a secret of her own.

The current political situation in the US; the rampant rumors and speculations of uncrupulous media; and the tragedies of families who lost loved ones in the Middle East are part of the background of this story.

This is probably a mildly enthusiastic recommendation. Readers who have followed Reacher in previous books will probably enjoy this. Those who wish to get started on Lee Child's books would do well to start with TRIPWIRE or ONE SHOT.
