In previous novels Lee Child has portrayed Jack Reacher as a loner. But in this latest installment we learn that the retired, rootless MP who roams the US like a crusader has friends. And they are the best kind of friends, who drop everything to meet him and help him avenge the deaths of other friends.

Of course, these friends were also MP's, and they all arrive on the scene with impressive skills in hand to hand combat and with contacts in the defense industry which prove very handy as the story unfolds. It seems they were originally a special squad of eight when they were in the Army together. And now four of the eight are dead, evidence pointing to each of them being pushed out of an aircraft over the desert while still breathing.

Reacher and his friends manage to discover that one of the four who died knew too much about a plan to divert important technology to enemies of the US. He had contacted the other three, and when they came to his aid, they too were killed. So in addition to avenging the deaths of their friends, the group must intercept the shipment before it is delivered to the wrong people. Child has served up another engrossing read. Fans who already know his books have a treat waiting, and those who are new to him are advised to get started soon!
