BOOK REVIEW: MARKED |
Marked is the first book in the House of Night series. In this astounding first book, Zoey is a 16 year old girl who is dealing with some serious family issues-her sister's slept with the football team, her brother's addicted to playing violent video games, her mother married the most single-minded, controlling bigot in the town, and she just got Marked. You see, in Zoey's life, vampires are normal to see-they're actors, play writers, poets, musicians, authors, and many other artists. The vampires have always remained separate from the humans, but that all changes when Zoey receives the Mark. It's a simple crescent moon (not filled in yet) and it either fills in and you complete the Change or you die and it stays empty.
We join Zoey in her new life as a vampire Fledgling. Her new friends the Twins (not actual twins), Damien (the awesome gay dude) and Stevie Rae (Zoey's new best friend) as Zoey struggles to find out her new place in the vampire world. The queen of the school is Aphrodite and her ex-boyfriend Erik Night has just started to show an interest in Zoey. He can't have come at a worst time because Zoey's human ex-boyfriend Heath has just Imprinted with Zoey and it's a near unbreakable bond. Zoey struggles to battle Aphrodite and her crew of fiendish friends and getting Heath to leave her alone.
To make things even more complicated, the vampire goddess Nyx is favoring Zoey as is the High Priestess Neferet. Zoey has shown an affinity for the five elements, air, fire, water, earth, and spirit-she's even more powerful than people think. Aphrodite is planning something, and it involves hurting Zoey. As you read this book, you will laugh out loud and continually wonder what will happen next. The mother-daughter Cast team writes an awesome first novel in this series.
