This is a coming of age story of Lisa and her best friend, Celeste. The story takes place in the late 1970's and early 1980's and follows their friendship through their high school and college years. Lisa narrates the novel.

Lisa and Celeste's family both moved to Kansas City, Missouri days before the start of the new school year. Both families wanted to place their daughters in the best private school. Lisa's life is quite different from the one Celeste is living. Lisa likes the type of life Celeste has because she lives in a big house, has two older sisters and great parents. Little by little, Lisa soon joins Celeste's household trying to fit into their normalcy of a family. Celeste's family was eager to do this because Lisa's mother had some problems and spent most of her time over-medicated.

It was during a testing session for the private school that Lisa and Celeste first met. Celeste asked Lisa for the answer to an exam question. Lisa gave her the answer and this is where their friendship begins.

The two girls go through many turbulent times together including alcohol, sex and drugs.

What happens to Lisa and Celeste?

The author does an excellent job of showing the concerns of any young woman growing up in our society and how disturbing things can get. She also does a great job of showing how strong the bond is between Lisa and Celeste. The author's writing style is very frank and she does not hold back on anything. This is Amanda Boyden's debut novel and if this any indication of her writing skills, we certainly look forward to more of her books.
