How do you react when your father blows your tuition to Yale after you had worked so hard for the admission opportunity?

Cassandra Cohane faced that calamity and became a completely different person. The transformation included changing her name to Devine, joining the Army, going to Bosnia, and from there a new and wild adventure began.

Much like Christopher Buckley poked fun at Washington and politics in general in his bestseller, “Thank You for Smoking”, he has now taken on the political establishment again. Using his humorous writing ability he again shows the absurdity of our governing system but this time as it pertains to our Social Security system.

Cassandra gets very into the Social Security system situation while working as a PR person in Washington. Using her blog CASSANDRA (Concerned Americans for Social Security Amendment Now, Debt Reduction and Accountability), she begins to incite many of the Under 30 generation to become not only believers in her movement but also proactive practioners. Her platform is staked on the idea that when the Baby Boomers begin drawing Social Security (on BOOMSDAY) the collapse of the system will begin.

While serving in Bosnia, she became acquainted with Senator Randall Jepperson in an unfortunate way The two later get bound together as the Senator uses Cassandra and her crusade against the inaction by the government in solving the impending bankruptcy of the Social Security.

Along the way Buckley weaves into his tale Cassandra’s good-for-nothing father, a bible thumping southern preacher, a few Russian strongmen, and a Russian lady of the night who falls in love with the preacher. They all join together and make for a well told farcical tale.

Since the thrust of Cassandra’s entourage comes from the UL-30 (under the age of 30) who will be hurt the most when the Boomers deplete the SS system, some of the language gets sprinkled with the “f” word. This especially shows up when Senator Jepperson runs for president and to prove he caters to the UL-30 group he tells the president to " Shut the F… Up" in a debate the two have on national TV.

The ending is a not the blockbuster that the book appeared to be heading to but all in all BOOMSDAY more than lives up to the previous works of Mr. Buckley and again this one will probably appear on the big screen in the near future.
