BOOK REVIEW: DEATH OF A DREAMER
Hamish Macbeth was glad to see the winter storms now gone because this was his favorite time of the year. Artist, Effie Garrard, is a newcomer in the town and everyone was surprised to see she stayed through the winter. MacBeth figured he better check on her. Effie was fine and told MacBeth she had been visiting her sister.
Another local artist, Jock Fleming, is in town. Effie is very good at fantasizing and convinces herself that Jock is in love with her. After an argument with Jock, Effie is found dead. The police classified it as a suicide but MacBeth thinks she was murdered and begins an investigation.
Was Effie murdered? There are several suspects in town. Among them are Effie's sister, Jock's ex wife, Jock's agent and, of course, Jock himself.
The author does an excellent job of describing the Highlands village of Lochdubh. When I sat down to read this book I figured it would be your "typical" mystery book. This novel turned out to be something quite different. It just blew me away. I really can't explain why but as I started to read the pages I became very engrossed in the story and could not stop reading. I'm sure it had something to do with the village of Lochdubh and the unique characters created by M.C. Beaton. The author makes you feel like you are right there in the village. This was a magical read and one that I enjoyed very much. I usually don't feel this way about too many books but this one is very special. Be sure to add this novel to your list. It is highly recommended.
