BOOK REVIEW: SIMPLE GENIOUS

Just by its name Babbage Town sounds like a town that might be different. Well, it is different beginning with the people that live there, its location across the river from Camp Peary, and the finding of dead citizens of the town. Strange? This is only the “beginning!”

Michelle Maxwell, ex-cop and ex-Secret Service, and a sometimes partner of Sean King, also ex-government agent, decided to walk into an extremely tough bar and proceeded to pick a physical fight with the biggest guy in the place. While Michelle was in excellent condition and very strong, her fight started with her hurting the guy quite bad until he decided this gal was not going to get the best of him. Michelle ended up in a hospital pretty well banged up. It was recommended that she go to a mental hospital for treatment since some thought she was attempting suicide.

Michelle did indeed sign herself into a hospital and started treatment. Problem was that the hospital had some strange things going on so good old Michelle had to start investigating by herself while pretending to be a serious patient. She made friends and dug quite deep into the lives of patients and staff.

The strange happenings at Babbage Town brought Sean King into the investigation to attempt to find out why things were so strange in the area and check what Camp Peary was all about. Sean wished he would have had his sometimes partner, Michelle, assisting him but he did keep her informed what he discovered. An eleven-year-old autistic girl, Viggie Turing, acted as though she knew a lot about the strange activities in the area but when questioned, she would run to the piano and play fantastically and further mystify Sean and the authorities. Was there a connection to all these locations and some secret code?

Sean had to figure out the connection of Camp Peary, the CIA, and the old military camp that had formerly been located where Camp Peary now sits. All attempts led to more hassle for Sean, the local sheriff, and local police that were active. An FBI investigator also came around to make Sean’s investigation even harder. All the time he kept in touch with Michelle and she couldn’t wait to get her investigation solved in the hospital so she could join Sean to help him, which she eventually did.

Have I gotten you interested in Simple Genius yet? If not, you need to read some boring book and take a nap! Baldacci has a great story and tells it extremely well. Another “hard to put down” book that I highly recommend.
