This book brings back the dynamic duo of Michelle Maxwell and Sean King. These two were once Secret Service agents and are now private investigators.
Maxwell, who has been feeling a little "down", goes to a bar and starts a fight with one of the other customers who is much bigger than she and almost ends up getting killed. Somehow she did manage to survive the ordeal. Sean persuades her to check into a mental hospital under the care of his friend, psychologist Horatio Barnes.
Sean is almost broke and ends up taking a job from one of his ex-girlfriends, Joan Dillinger who is now a big shot at a P.I. firm. She sends him to Virginia to investigate a suspicious death of a physicist whose research involves something other countries would fight to get.
As time goes on, there are more deaths and many other strange things happening. Sean is not receiving any cooperation while trying to find out what is going on. His life is also threatened.
Is Michelle able to get her life back in order? Is Sean able to solve the case of the mysterious deaths?
There is a lot going on throughout this novel which has several subplots. David Baldacci does a good job of bringing the whole story together. The thing I liked best about this story is the relationship between Michelle and Sean. It is a platonic one but you can see that they were really there for each other. When compared to other David Baldacci books, I don't believe this one is quite as good. It just did not have the "zing" that some of his books have had in the past. Nonetheless, the partnership of Michelle and Sean make this book a worthwhile read. David Baldacci fans will not be disappointed.
